QatarEnergy has entered into a new agreement with Qatar Petroleum Development (QPD) to continue the development and production of the Al-Karkara and A-Structures offshore oil fields.
The new five-year agreement comes following the development and production sharing agreement signed in December 1997.
As part of the new agreement, Japan’s QPD will continue as the operator of the oil fields, which are in the territorial waters of the state of Qatar.
Al-Karkara and A-Structures, which are located around 90km to the east of Doha, include three small fields.
The Al-Karkara oil field was discovered in 1988. The A-Structures, including A-North and A-South, were discovered in 1971.
QPD proved the commercial viability of these fields in the late 1990s.
Commencing production in March 2006, the fields have produced a total of 33.5 million barrels of crude oil.
These fields are claimed to be the first in Qatar to attain zero gas flaring by re-injecting the additional sour gas underground.
QatarEnergy president and CEO Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi said: “We are pleased to continue our partnership with Qatar Petroleum Development Company (Japan) and to work together to continue the development and production of the Al-Karkara and A-Structures fields.
“We look forward to the next five years of cooperation with QPD, whose successful efforts have unlocked the capabilities of these relatively small fields and added value to our partnership.”
