Subsea umbilical supplier JDR has received a contract from oil and gas firm Beach Energy, to deliver subsea umbilicals for the Otway basin, offshore Victoria, Australia.
The contract will see TFKable Group-owned JDR deliver four subsea umbilicals that range from 400m to 4,360m in length, as well as termination hardware, including hydraulic and electrical flying leads.
The umbilicals will be installed as part of a subsea production system at Beach Energy’s natural gas fields, in the Otway basin.
JDR will initially install one umbilical, with a subsea distribution unit (SDU), via an existing J-tube on the Thylacine wellhead platform.
The firm will connect the second umbilical to the SDU to tie in the Thylacine North-1 well, which is located 4km northwest of the platform.
This cable, with an integral SDU, will allow two additional subsea umbilicals to be connected to the Thylacine North-2 and Thylacine West drill centres.
The electrical and hydraulic flying leads will link the four subsea wellheads to terminations on each umbilical.
Covering an area of 150,000km2, the Otway basin spans from southeastern South Australia, to southwestern Victoria.
Beach’s operations in the Otway basin include the Halladale, Speculant, Geographe, and Thylacine natural gas fields.
The produced natural gas is transported and processed at the Otway gas plant, which is located near Port Campbell.
JDR said that its thermoplastic umbilical system will enable increased production at the Otway gas plant, and help to deliver a new supply of gas to the country’s East Coast.

JDR plans to manufacture the umbilicals and accessories at its facility in Hartlepool, UK, with delivery scheduled for September 2022.
Last year, Beach Energy announced that it had made a new discovery at the Artisan 1 exploration well, located 30km offshore Australia.
