German pipeline operator Gascade has completed what it claims to be the first liquefied natural gas (LNG) pipeline project to the country’s gas network.
The LNG pipeline, which is planned to be commissioned in December 2022, will link the floating storage regasification unit (FSRU) to a landing station as part of the Deutsche Regas’ Deutsche Ostee LNG project.
The new 450m-long pipeline will connect the FSRU to the landing station near Lubmin, where liquefied gas will be converted into a gaseous state.
The regasified liquefied gas will then be supplied from the Greifswald landing station to Germany and Europe via the OPAL North European Gas Pipeline (NEL) gas pipelines and the European Gas Pipeline Link (EUGAL).
Gascade managing director Christoph von dem Bussche said: “The project shows that we are reliable and, this way, are supporting the government’s efforts and society’s wish to quickly diversify supply sources.”
Gascade project manager Stefan Petter said: “The project was very demanding in terms of time, and we are proud that we can already make our contribution this winter to supply security for Germany and Europe.
“That was only possible with a competent and very dedicated team.”
Designed to have a feed-in capacity of approximately 6GWh/h, the pipeline is also expected to be used for hydrogen supplies.
Germany recently completed the construction of its first LNG Jetty at the North Sea port of Wilhelmshaven.
The new LNG jetty, which was built by Niedersachsen Ports (Nports), comprises a docking platform and dolphins, with rubbing paunches, in addition to mooring dolphins for the berth.
