Global caustic soda capacity is poised to see considerable growth over the next five years, potentially increasing from 100.69 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) in 2022 to 106.92mtpa in 2027, registering total growth of 6.2%. Around 40 planned and announced caustic soda projects are expected to come online, predominantly in Asia, followed by the Middle East over the upcoming years.

Asia is expected to add a capacity of 1.31mtpa from six new build planned and announced projects, whereas, for the expansion of the existing caustic soda projects, the region is expected to add a capacity of 2.67mtpa from 11 planned and announced projects. Within Asia, India leads with the largest capacity additions, with a capacity of 1.55mtpa from six planned and announced projects. The main capacity addition will be from an announced project, Lords Chloro Alkali Alwar caustic soda plant, with a capacity of 0.74mtpa. It is expected to commence production of caustic soda in 2023.

The Middle East follows next with a capacity of 1.17mtpa from four new-build projects, whereas, for the expansion of the existing caustic soda project, the region is expected to add a capacity of 0.02mtpa from a planned project. Taziz EDC and PVC Ruwais caustic soda plant, an announced project in the UAE leads with a capacity of 0.94mtpa and is expected to come online in 2025.
