Global ethylene capacity is poised to see considerable growth over the next five years, potentially increasing from 214.39mtpa in 2021 to 324.90mtpa in 2030, registering total growth of 51.5%. Around 146 planned and announced plants are slated to come online, primarily in Asia and the Middle East.

Within Asia, China has 35 planned and announced ethylene capacity additions, with a total capacity of about 37.35mtpa by 2030. The country is expected to spend a capital expenditure (capex) of $41.92bn. Major capacity additions will be from two announced projects, Shandong Yulong Petrochemical Longkou Ethylene Plant 2 and Sinochem Quanzhou Petrochemical Quanzhou Ethylene Plant 2.

In the Middle East, the majority of the capacity additions are from Iran, with capacity additions of about 12.55mtpa. The country is expected to spend a total of $10bn by 2030. The major capacity addition is from a planned project, Sepehr Makran Chabahar Ethylene Plant, with a capacity of 1.35mtpa.

Shandong Yulong Petrochemical Ltd, China Petrochemical Corp and Exxon Mobil Corp will be the top three companies globally in terms of planned and announced capacity additions over the upcoming years.
