At 2,643 pounds, the new Bad Ax weighs over 400 pounds less than the previous model, and is positioned about 5 inches closer to the power unit for improved balance, stability, and flotation of the skid steer. Even with the lighter weight, other changes to the unit have improved the durability due to updates to the steel housing and a larger diameter main shaft. Performance has also been improved due to the new radial piston high-pressure motor, which provides full torque capability at start-up for fast recovery time. The redesigned intake also adds to the increased performance with better material flow through the unit. READ MORE: BOBCAT RELEASES NEW LAND-CLEARING ATTACHMENTS The Bad Ax requires a skid steer with 70 to 120 hydraulic hp. to operate, and features a universal mount for pairing with a wide variety of brands and models. Cutting disc Like the original model, the updated Bad Ax has a fully machined 60-inch-diameter disc that can cut trees up to 14 inches in diameter. The large design of the disc builds up its own inertia during use, pushing it beyond the maximum hydraulic horsepower, helping it quickly gather and process vegetation. The disc is fully machined and contains no welds, which gives it a stronger build and makes it less likely to be subjected to stress cracking. The heat-treated steel Quadco blades slice through vegetation instead of shredding or tearing material. The blades are mounted to the disc with a single hex bolt, making for easy removal so they can be sharpened or rotated on site to keep a sharp, fresh cutting edge and keep up machine efficiency. The bolt-on mounts can also be replaced in the field without the need for cutting, welding, or rebalancing the rotor. Disc housing The housing has a recutter bar along with counter teeth to hold material in place while mulching. This design helps the mulcher cut material into finer particles and avoid log jams in the chamber. The Bad Ax also features a housing design with parallel sides to provide better control over funnel, or V-shape disc mulchers. The front of the housing is angled allowing teeth to mulch at ground level, and a rigid discharge deflector helps control material discharge. Price and availability The Loftness Bad Ax is available to order now, with a list price of $34,482. Customers can check with their local dealers for retail pricing.
