7 States report soybeans setting pods

Of the top 18 soybean-producing states, USDA said that seven reported soybeans setting pods as of June 30.

In Monday’s Crop Progress report, USDA reported percentages of soybeans setting pods for top soybean-producing states. As of June 30, 3% of the soybeans in those 18 states were setting pods, which is ahead of the five-year average by 1 percentage point. Here’s a look at the 7 states that reported soybeans setting pods as of this point in the season.

Arkansas

According to USDA, 43% of Arkansas’ soybeans were setting pods as of June 30, an increase of 18 percentage points from the week prior and the most reported in the country of top-producing states. Last year at this time, 37% of the state’s soybean crop was setting pods. According to Monday’s report, the state easily surpassed the five-year average of 19%. 

Overall, Arkansas’ soybeans were in mostly good to excellent shape as of June 30. USDA rated 1% very poor, 4% poor, 21% fair, 58% good, and 16% excellent. 

Mississippi

With 33% soybeans setting pods, an increase of 19 percentage points for the week, Mississippi ranked second of top-producing states. Last year at this time, a similar percentage (31%) of the crop was setting pods. The state’s exceeding the five-year average of 20%.

USDA rated 1% of Mississippi’s soybeans very poor, 6% poor, 24% fair, 50% good, and 19% excellent. 

Louisiana

USDA said in Monday’s report that 28% of Louisiana’s soybeans were setting pods as of June 30, an increase of 12 percentage points for the week. Although that is 1 percentage point ahead of where the state was last year at this time, the five-year average is 10 percentage points higher, at 38%. 

Louisiana’s soybeans rated 0% very poor, 3% poor, 14% fair, 68% good, and 15% excellent.

Tennessee

Tennessee is the final state in the list with more than just 1 percent of soybeans setting pods. Of the state’s soybean crop, 5% is setting pods. That’s compared to none reported the week prior. Last year at this time, 6% of Tennessee’s soybeans were setting pods, and the five-year average is 2%. 

Soybeans in Tennessee rated 2% very poor, 5% poor, 22% fair, 57% good, and 14% excellent. 

Illinois

Just 1% of the soybeans in Illinois were setting pods as of June 30, up a percentage point for the week. Last year at this time, the same percentage (1%) of the state’s soybeans were setting pods. The five-year average for the state is 0%. 

As for the condition of the state’s soybeans, USDA rated 3% very poor, 6% poor, 27% fair, 56% good, and 8% excellent. 

Indiana

Like its neighbor to the west, just 1% of Indiana’s soybeans were setting pods as of June 30, the first for the state this year. The percentage reported last year at this time was 0%, the same as the five-year average for the state.

Indiana’s soybeans rated 2% very poor, 7% poor, 27% fair, 52% good, and 12% excellent. 

Iowa

Rounding out the 3 states with 1% soybeans setting pods was Iowa, also the first for the state this growing season. That’s the same percentage as last year at this time and the five-year average.

Iowa’s soybeans rated 2% very poor, 5% poor, 21% fair, 58% good, and 14% excellent.
