Good/excellent corn decreased over 5 percentage points in 5 states

The country’s corn rated good/excellent decreased overall last week. These five states with declining crop conditions contributed to this trend the most.

The country’s corn rated good/excellent decreased overall last week. These five states with declining crop conditions contributed to this trend the most.

In the Crop Progress report released Monday, USDA rated corn conditions for the second week this growing season. Overall, a smaller percentage of the country’s corn was in good to excellent shape compared to the previous week. There were six states in total that saw any fluctuations in good/excellent corn greater than 5 percentage points: Five had decreases in good/excellent corn of 6 to 11 percentage points. Only one state had an increase in good/excellent corn.

Kentucky

Good/excellent corn dropped 11 percentage points in Kentucky.

According to USDA’s Crop Progress report released Monday, 58% of Kentucky’s corn rated good/excellent as of June 9. 

Across the state, Kentucky corn was rated 51% good and 7% excellent. That’s down from the week prior when corn in the state was rated 60% good and 9% excellent.

North Dakota

North Dakota’s corn rated good/excellent tumbled 9 percentage points. 

As of June 9, 72% of North Dakota’s corn rated good/excellent. Most of the crop, 68%, rated good, while 4% rated excellent. 

Across the state, corn in good/excellent shape decreased 9 percentage points from the previous week. For the week ending June 2, 74% of North Dakota’s corn rated good and 7% rated excellent for a total of 81% corn in good or better condition.

North Carolina

North Carolina’s corn rated good/excellent fell 8 percentage points.

USDA said that 64% of North Carolina’s corn rated good and 9% rated excellent as of the week ending June 9. That’s almost three quarters of the state’s corn rated good/excellent. Still, compared to the previous week, it’s an 8 point drop in good/excellent corn.

Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania’s corn rated good/excellent decreased 7 percentage points.

As of June 9, 80% of Pennsylvania’s corn rated good and 13% rated excellent. With a combined total of 93% corn rated good or excellent, that’s the highest of all top corn-producing states last week. Compared to the state’s outstanding corn conditions the week prior, though, it’s a 7 percentage point decrease in good or excellent corn. Pennsylvania’s corn the week ending June 2 rated 82% good and 18% excellent. 

Texas

Texas’ corn rated good/excellent decreased 6 points. 

USDA said that the week ending June 9, 57% of corn in Texas rated good or better – 45% good and 12% excellent. Overall, that’s a 6 percentage point decrease of corn rated good/excellent compared to the week prior. For the week ending June 2, 63% of corn in Texas rated good or better – 49% good and 14% excellent.

Colorado

Colorado’s corn rated good/excellent increased 7 percentage points.

For the week ending June 9, USDA rated 70% of Colorado’s corn at least good – 63% rated good and 7% rated excellent. In terms of corn rated in these top two condition categories, that’s an increase of 7 percentage points compared to the previous week. For that week, the state’s corn rated 57% good and 6% excellent for a total of 63% good/excellent.

Remaining states

Other top-producing states for which the percentage of corn rated good/excellent increased last week are Nebraska (4 points), Missouri (3 points), Illinois (2 points), Kansas (1 points), and South Dakota (1 points).

Other top-producing states for which the percentage of corn rated good/excellent decreased last week are Minnesota (-4 points), Ohio (-4 points), Michigan (-2 points), Tennessee (-1 points), and Wisconsin (-1 points).

For the remaining top-producing states – Indiana and Iowa – the percentage of corn rated good/excellent did not change.
