The new PL5905 planter is a 60-foot bulk fill planter designed for farmers working on large acreages — the Great Plains’ largest planter yet.

The new planter is available in 15-inch spacing with 47 rows, or 30-inch spacing with 24 rows, and has some additional upgrades to the row units, bushings and parallel links. This is designed for tractors with over 280 hp for planting crops like soybeans and corn, as well as alternative seeds like hemp and canola.

“The planter is a bulk-fill machine with 164 bushel capacity, so you can fill it up and plant a long day on a single fill,” says Tony Wisker, vice president of sales and marketing for Great Plains.

Great Plains has replaced its split air system in favor of a new dual fan system with dedicated fans for the seed meter and seed delivery system. This allows the planter to keep seed on the meter at all times without skips, delivered through every row.

Despite its working size, the planter has a transport width of 15 feet and three inches, and a transport height of 12 feet and 3 inches. It also has an optional telescoping tongue and hitch to keep the planter close to the tractor for maneuverability.

5005 Series row unit

The PL5905’s new 5005 Series row unit has 15-inch, 4mm offset blades, with triple-lip sealed bearings for long life and accurate seed depth. This also features new ductile-cast parallel arms and opener bodies with larger pivot bushings.

The row units feature individual row control electric drive, to help farmers implement variable-rate seeding, section control, and turn-row compensation to maximize efficiency and inputs.

The row units are “Ag Leader-ready,” with Ag Leader’s SureForce active down pressure system factory or dealer-installed, Wisker says. The planter can still be purchased with spring down pressure. These are also compatible with Great Plains’ AccuShot in-row fertilizer application system.

“Our focus on the PL5905 and other PL Series planters has been on adding value and practical technology for producers, like the precise placement of fertilizer with the AccuShot system and automatic downforce adjustments for changing planting conditions with Ag Leader’s SureForce technology,” says Doug Jennings, tillage and planter producer manager for Great Plains.

Operators have their choice of closing wheels to fit their operation, including tapered cast iron wheels, wedge wheels that pinch the seed trench closed, double-V closing wheels for all-around performance, or spider wheels with a drag chain for a more aggressive trench-closing option.

Other options include spoked side-depth wheels, coulters and row cleaners, and a 7-inch or 12.1-inch Topcon operating display.
