15 Minutes With a Farmer podcast: Making plans with Mark McLaughlin

Mark McLaughlin

In this episode, I sit down with Mark McLaughlin, an associate with Farm Financial Strategies, co-owner of Farm Estate GPS in Ankeny, Iowa, and one of the fifth generation to own his family's farm near Defiance, Iowa.

He has been helping farm families across the Midwest develop their farm succession strategies for nearly 20 years, and is a regular contributor to the feature, "Can Their Problem Be Solved?" in each issue of Successful Farming magazine.

We discuss what holds farmers back from creating a farm succession plan and recurring themes he sees from those who write to "Can Their Problem Be Solved?" for help.

Get out of your head a little bit. You’re always going to come up with reasons why you shouldn't get started: The timing’s not right. I want to wait until the next presidential election. I’m going to be inheriting more ground. I don’t want to upset the kids. Take that next step and start the process to figure how to get from where you are today to where you want to be.
